I told myself I wouldn’t touch my stimulus payment unless it was an emergency but I decided to put some of it to a good cause. After upgrading my desktop to a new case, PSU, and GPU in February I have most of a PC just sitting around. Today I ordered a mobo and RAM to complete it.
My mom just had her solar installation activated so I’m thinking I’ll bring it over and set it up folding in a corner headless. It won’t make as many points as my current rig but it can be run 24/7 for free, and I could sell the completed unit for a few hundred bucks once all this is over.

Folding question: how much network resources do you suspect it uses? I have a work machine that sits on my desk 24/7 pulling sensor data every 6 hours. So it has pretty much 99% unused processing power. I found my home tower gets way too hot / way too loud to be folding all the time for me to tolerate.

It doesn’t have a constant network link, the program only seems to connect periodically to upload your job progress and download new ones. Once I get home I'll double check.

Essextee is correct, doesn't use much network information outside of downloading and uploading jobs.

New computer parts are always fun!

This is cor rect. It uses very little network resources but maxes out your CPU.

Bandwidth is fairly low to fold. Figure about 50-100MB per WU and depending on how quickly your system hammers out WUs , will tell you how much data per day. What are the system specs?

Win 7
Core i7 6600 2.6
8gB RAM
Radeon R7 m360

T he i7 will probably do about 4-8 WUs per day and the GPU will probably do about 8-10 , by my back of the napkin math. Sometimes WUs take longer and might be a bit larger data set, thereby reducing the number per day but you get more points for those.
Figure about 1.2 GB up and also down , per machine, per day.

Sounds good. I'll set it up tomorrow. Thanks for the input.
